Dental, Vision, & Hearing Coverage

Dental, vision, and hearing coverage is notoriously absent from most health insurance policies and must be purchased separately. This coverage operates similarly to standard health insurance, except the coverage only applies to these specialty services.

What Types Of Services Are Covered?

Covered dental services include:

  • Cleanings
  • X-rays
  • Exams
  • Fillings
  • Extractions

Covered vision services include:

  • Eye exams
  • Contact lenses
  • Glasses
  • Frames

Covered hearing services include:

  • Hearing exams
  • Hearing aids

How Does Dental, Vision, and Hearing Coverage Work?

Dental, vision, and hearing coverage typically increases for the first three years. For example, your insurer may pay 60% of the costs for covered services for the first year you hold your policy, 70% of the costs for services received in the second year, and 80% of the costs from the third year and beyond.

Some policies impose waiting periods for certain procedures, where the policyholder must wait and pay premiums for a certain amount of time after enrolling in a policy before they can get coverage benefits from that policy. For instance, a dental, vision, and hearing plan may not have waiting periods for basic exams but may require a waiting period of 12 months before an individual can get hearing aids or glasses.

A dental, vision, and hearing policy may limit coverage to a network. In this context, a network would consist of medical specialists in a contract with the insurance plan. With this contract, dental, vision, and hearing specialists agree to be part of a network in order to have access to more patients.

What Are The Costs?

The costs involved include copayments, deductibles, premiums, and coinsurance.

Copayments are costs paid each time an individual gets dental, vision, or hearing services. Deductibles are the amount the policyholder pays out-of-pocket before coverage kicks in. Premiums are the monthly cost of keeping the policy. Coinsurance is the amount an individual pays after insurance has covered its share of the costs.

This type of policy is offered through private insurers. If you are in a Medicare plan, you can receive dental, vision, and hearing coverage by switching to a Medicare Advantage plan (Medicare Part C), which also combines Medicare’s Part A inpatient and Part B outpatient coverage into one policy.
