Always ask for an insurance license when shopping online or over the phone. By law, an agent must have a valid 2-15 license issued by the Department of Financial Services. The agent must have passed a background check as well as completed a course and state exam to be licensed. BE CAREFUL WITH AGENTS WHO REFUSE TO SEND THEIR LICENSE AND PROOF THAT IS THEM! Feel free to ask for ID to confirm, as well as search their license online to make sure its active! Too many people are misled by agents who refuse to provide a legitimate license.
The agent must offer to do a webinar, or email brochures of the products that they are trying to sell you. By law you have to see the brochures before applying for any coverage. It is too easy for people to tell you what you want to hear over the phone, so make sure that they are showing you as well to avoid being misled.
Understand that health insurance is different than car insurance. The name of the company is not as important as the coverage. You need to understand the basics of coverage such as NETWORK, DEDUCTIBLE, and OUT OF POCKET MAX. Some agents will call you and will only tell you the good things about the coverage because they know that you don’t know what questions to ask. So be sure to ask the right questions.
